The next day Paige called the Commonwealth’s Medical Examiner in Norfolk. It really wasn’t her job, or her right, to do so, but she had no faith in the sheriff’s department doing it. After working her way through the various levels of telephone bureaucracy she ended up with the Administrative Assistant of the Medical Examiner. The woman sounded intelligent and sympathetic, so Paige poured out the entire tale to her, including how the sheriff’s department apparently wanted to just sweep the whole thing under the rug.
“What?” questioned the woman. “That’s outrageous. And it’s illegal, too. Miss Reese, I’m so glad that you called. I’ll fill in the M.E. with the whole story but first I’ll arrange for one of our vans to head over and pick the body up from you. Once the body’s out of your cooler, there’s nothing the sheriff’s department can say or do.”
“That would be great,” enthused Paige. “When can they come over?”
“You just watch your front door. I’m going to send them now. I would imagine they’ll be there to collect the body in just over an hour. Please have her in a body bag and ready to go.”
“You’ve got it,” said Paige, “and thank you so very much. Will you let me know what you find?”
“Of course. And I’ll hurry along the tox screen, too.”
“Thank you.” Paige hung up the phone.
It was good that the body was in her possession and not at the sheriff’s department. Once this was a done deal Pablo could go take a long run off a short pier.
Okay. The Office of the Medical Examiner was going to handle the forensics of the body, but Paige could still do her investigating of the other parts of the case. This was someone’s little girl. She had been murdered. And no one in Northampton County seemed to even care. Well, she cared. She was going to do everything she could for the little unknown girl.
“Nott,” Paige called up the stairs. “Come help me get the little girl ready for the medical examiner to pick up.”
Nott came down the stairs from the apartment. In recent days, through her constant efforts, he was beginning to loosen up and become more verbal. “You’re movin’ her out?”
“Yes, you know I’m not a real coroner or a medical examiner. I’ve done everything I can think of, but I still haven’t been able to figure out what killed her. The people at the Commonwealth’s Medical Examiner’s office have the tools and the experience to figure it out.”
“Okay. I get that. But we still don’t even know who she is. How can we figure out who did her in without even knowing that?”
“Good point,” Paige agreed. “That’s where we come in.”
“We? I ain’t no detective.”
“I know, but I hope that you and I can figure this thing out just using our common sense.”
“What do you want me to do?” asked Nott.
“Well, I think the first thing to do is to look at the obvious. I think we should investigate the high school boys.
